Bleeding gums are one of the most common dental problems faced by the population in today’s world. Many people consider or address it as pyorrhea or inflamed gums and ignore them. But bleeding gums are often a signal from our body that it need a little attention or it can worsen with time.
Causes:
There are various causes of bleeding gums which we need to understand:
1. Gingivitis:
This term explains the inflammation of gingiva due to something called plaque (a sticky deposit) or calculus (a hard deposit) accumulation. Plaque or calculus binds to the tooth or gums around the gum line and causes inflammation. Red, swollen, or tender gums that bleed during routine brushing or spitting denotes gingival inflammation. The good part is , it is reversible with routine dental checkup and professional cleaning of the tooth.
2. Periodontitis:
This is an advanced condition of gingivitis if we don’t treat it, where we see loss of tissues due to damaged or infected surrounding structures of tooth. Again it is due to plaque or calculus deposition in and around the gum-line. This condition is not reversible but curable to some extent with various modalities.
3. Pregnancy:
There is something known as Pregnancy induced gingivitis where we see the signs of gingivitis i.e. inflammation of gums without any major deposition. This condition mainly occurs due to hormonal imbalances in a women during pregnancy which causes irregular supply of blood to the gums leading to its bleeding. This is a temporary issue but can give long term difficulties if not handled properly.
4. Nutritional Deficiencies:
Many Vitamins and Minerals helps in maintaining the soft tissues in our human body. Deficiency of some vitamins like Vitamin C, K can make a person prone to easy bleeding as these vitamins helps in tissue repair, blood clotting, newer tissue formation etc.

What should we do?
The first thing to think of is about the oral habits. We just need to brush our teeth twice daily for just 1 min and also to avoid any deleterious habit, if we have any. If we are brushing properly and still gums are bleeding, we need to visit a dentist for a routine dental checkup. We might need a scaling or professional cleaning of our tooth. It’s a myth that scaling loosens or damages our teeth. And also it’s important to stay hydrated and give our tissues that much moisture to regain it’s strength.
When Should You See a Dentist?
While a stray red spit or blood might not be an emergency, you should schedule an appointment if you notice:
Persistent Bleeding: It happens every time you brush for more than a week.
Receding Gums: Your teeth look "longer" than they used to.
Persistent Bad Breath: This often indicates deep-seated bacteria.
Loose Teeth: A sign of advanced bone or tissue loss.
Don’t ignore your gums as they are those sensitive structures which surrounds and holds your invaluable teeth in your mouth. So if you are seeing a red color saliva or red foam while brushing, it’s probably your gums which need your attention.
