Dental cavities are one of the most common oral health problems affecting people of all ages. Often, they start silently and progress without noticeable pain, until significant damage has already occurred. Recognizing the early signs can help prevent serious complications and save your teeth.

What Are Cavities?

Cavities, also known as dental caries, are permanently damaged areas in the tooth caused by bacteria, acids, and plaque buildup. Over time, these acids dissolve the tooth enamel, leading to holes or decay.

How Do Cavities Develop?

Cavities form in stages:

• Plaque buildup on teeth

• Acid attack on enamel

• Enamel breakdown

• Progression into dentin and pulp

Why You Should NOT Ignore Cavities?

1. Cavities Don’t Heal on Their Own:- Once a cavity forms, it cannot reverse naturally. It will only get bigger and spread more with time.

2. Pain Comes Late:- Early cavities are often painless. By the time you feel pain, the decay has already reached deeper layers of the tooth.

3. Risk of Infection:- Untreated cavities can lead to infection of the pulp, causing Severe pain, Swelling or Abscess formation

4. Tooth Weakening and Fracture:- As decay progresses, the tooth structure becomes weak and may break while chewing. .

5. Tooth Loss: If left untreated for long, cavities can lead to complete destruction of the tooth, requiring extraction.

6. Spread of Infection:- In severe cases, infection can spread to surrounding tissues and even affect overall health.

Early Signs You Should Not Ignore

1. Tooth Sensitivity: If you feel discomfort while having hot tea, cold drinks, or sweets then it can be due to a carious tooth. Sensitivity is often the first warning sign of enamel damage.

2. Toothache or Spontaneous Pain:- Persistent or occasional toothache—especially without any obvious cause—can indicate that the cavity has reached deeper layers of the tooth.

3. Visible Holes or Pits:- If you notice small holes, black spots, or pits on your teeth, it is a clear sign of decay that requires immediate attention.

4. Staining on Teeth:- Brown, black, or white spots on the tooth surface may indicate early or advanced stages of cavities.

5. Pain While Biting or Chewing:- Discomfort during chewing suggests that the decay may have weakened the tooth structure.

6. Bad Breath (Halitosis):- Persistent bad breath can result from bacterial activity associated with cavities and plaque accumulation.

7. Food Getting Stuck Frequently:- If food tends to get stuck in a particular tooth repeatedly, it may be due to a cavity or breakdown of tooth structure
